Jupiter-Saturn Cycle: Timeline

Jupiter-Saturn Cycle

Much has been made of the recent Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Aquarius that occurred on the winter solstice in 2020. Some have mistakenly claimed that this was the first conjunction in an Air Sign in five hundred years. But technically, the conjunction in Libra in 1980 was the first to occur in an Air Sign since 1405AD. Then we had one last conjunction in an Earth Sign (Taurus) in the year 2000. But the 2020 conjunction in Aquarius kicks off 200 years of conjunctions exclusively in Air signs. This follows a roughly 200-year period of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions in Earth signs.

Though Jupiter takes a mere 12 years to orbit the Sun, and Saturn takes 28.5 years, the two planets conjoin in the zodiac every 20 years like clockwork. By the time Jupiter returns to the degree of the last conjunction, Saturn has progressed several signs. It takes Jupiter another 2/3rd of its 12-year cycle to catch up with Saturn for another conjunction. When a planet moves around the zodiac in thirds, it remains in the same element. Therefore, each Jupiter-Saturn conjunction tends to occur in the same element as the one before. Roughly every two hundred years, the conjunctions shift into the next element; Fire>Earth>Air>Water.

Jupiter-Saturn Conjunctions: Overview

Looking at an overview of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions, we can see a clear pattern. Every fourth conjunction, about 60 years apart, occurs in the same sign 3 or 4 times in a row before shifting to the next sign. From 1400AD to 1600AD they occurred mainly in Water Signs, then in Fire Signs from 1600-1800, Earth Signs from 1800-2000, and now in Air Signs until 2200AD. It takes roughly 800 years to complete this cycle of conjunctions through the elements. For example, a conjunction occurred in the early degrees of Aries in 1702AD. The next Jupiter-Saturn conjunction to occur near the same degree of Aries will be 795 years later in 2497AD.

Expansion/Contraction

Because Jupiter represents expansion and Saturn represents contraction, it’s important to observe the conjunctions and oppositions between these two dynamic planets.  Below, I’ll give a brief timeline of these transits from 1720 through 1900. Then we’ll explore the 60-year cycles from 1900 through 2320AD. After 2200AD, every conjunction for the following 200 years will occur in Water Signs, just as they did roughly 400-600 years ago.

60-Year Cycles

Next we’ll explore the 60-year cycles from 1900 through the year 2320AD featuring images from Archetypal Explorer. Notice how each 60-year cycle is roughly two Saturn cycles, and five Jupiter cycles. For example, the Jupiter-Saturn opposition beginning in 1930 occurs when Saturn returned to Capricorn after the 1901 conjunction, with Jupiter in Cancer having progressed 2.5 cycles. As Saturn returned to Capricorn again in 1960, Jupiter finished another 2.5 cycles, also returning to Capricorn for another conjunction.

The Aquarian Age Series continues…

The Age of Aquarius will continue from now until about 4200AD, when the Age of Capricorn begins. The Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction that occurred on Dec. 21, 2020, was the beginning of a decade of change, kicking off a century of change. The second half of the 2020s will be an unprecedented moment in our human evolution. In the Aquarian Age Blog and Podcast series, we’ll continue to explore this decade and beyond.
